Masonic Lodge Bursary
($1000.00)

Presented by Concord Lodge No. 79, Parksville.

  1. A $1000.00 bursary will be awarded by the Concord Masonic Lodge #79 at the Kwalikum Secondary School Awards Ceremony in June.

  2. The bursary will be presented annually for a period of some years to a graduate of Kwalikum Secondary School.

  3. The student must be proceeding to a form of advance training in one of the following:
    • a university
    • a technical school
    • a regional college in either a university transfer or vocational program
    • a registered school of nursing

  4. The student must have a record of satisfactory achievement and be a good citizen.

  5. Preference will be given to those applicants with financial need.

  6. The recipient of the bursary will be selected by the Kwalikum Secondary School Scholarship Committee.

  7. Applications must reach the Scholarship Committee of Kwalikum Secondary School by April 5th, 2007.

  8. The recipient of the bursary must provide the donor with proof of registration in a post-secondary institution. Arrangements will then be made to have the amount of the bursary forwarded to the Registrar of that institution.

  9. The recipient must register at a post-secondary institution by December 31st in the year in which he/she receives the bursary.

McDonald's Youth Achievement Scholarship
($500)

In recognition of achievements of its employees, the owners of the Parksville McDonald's Resaurant are offering awards to graduating students who have been employed at McDonald's for at least 2 years. Two awards of $500 will be offered; one each to a graduate of Ballenas Secondary School and Kwalikum Secondary School.

Criteria for Selection

  1. The applicant must be an employee of McDonald's Restaurant, Parksville, and have been so for the previous two years;
  2. The applicant must demonstrate good citizenship, leadership, and/or sportsmanship;
  3. The applicant must demonstrate satisfactory academic achievements;
  4. The student must be enrolling in a recognized university, college or institute of technology.

How to Access

The recipient of this scholarship must provide the donor with proof of registration in a post-secondary institution. Arrangements will then be made to have the amount of the scholarship forwarded to the registrar of the institution.

The scholarship must be claimed within two years of being awarded.

Applications

Applications should be made in the form of a letter addressed to McDonalds Resuraunt detailing the applicant's qualifications, needs and plans.

The completed applications must reach the Counselling Department by April 5th,2007 NO LATER THAN 3:30 PM.

Selection

Selection of this award will be made by the Kwalikum Secondary School Scholarship Committee.

Mid Island Co-op Bursary
($1000)

This bursary is to be awarded by the members of the Mid-Island Consumer Services Co-Operative to deserving students in the secondary school system.  Two bursaries will be awarded to School District 69 with one bursary being awarded to Kwalikum Secondary School and one to Ballenas Secondary School.  

Each student's family must be a Co-Op member in good standing. The student must be enrolling in a recognized university, college or institute of technology.

Proof of registration from a post-secondary institution is required before funds are released.

A 3.0 (B) G.P.A. is desirable, although not required. Preference will be given to applicants not receiving other major awards.

The money must be claimed within one year of being awarded.

After checking that applicants are Co-Op members in good standing, selection of a suitable candidate will be made, by the Kwalikum Secondary School Scholarship Comittee.

Application deadline is April 5, 2007.

Mt. Arrowsmith Rhododendron Society Scholarship
($250.00)
  1. A bursary totaling the amount of two hundred fifty dollars ($250.00) is available for the 2007-2008 academic year.
  2. It will be awarded to a graduate or mature student entering a diploma or degree granting Canadian institution to pursue an earth sciences or agricultural program with specialization in horticulture, landscape architecture, nursery or orchard management, or a related botanical field.

  3. It will be awarded on the basis of academic standing and need.
  4. Those eligible are secondary school graduates residing in Districts #69 (Qualicum) or #70 (Port Alberni) who are entering a Canadian college or university.
  5. To apply, provide Ms. Slaughter with the a letter containing the following information no later than April 30th, 2007.

  10. The MARS Scholarship Committee will select a recipient from those applicants who meet the criteria. The money will be paid to the Registrar's office when the student provides proof of registration and may be applied to tuition and/or books. The award must be claimed within six months of graduation.

Mount Arrowsmith Teachers' Association Scholarship
($1000.00)
  1. Students in Grade 12 on a program leading to university entrance are eligible for this scholarship.
  2. The award will be based on the school's internal examinations. A minimum "C+" average will be required.
  3. Preference will be given to applicants entering the teaching profession. If there are no such applicants, the Scholarship Committee will consider students entering other university faculties.
  4. Applications must be submitted to the Principal of Kwalikum Secondary School by April 5 th, 2007.
  5. The recipient of the scholarship must inform the Mount Arrowsmith Teachers' Association of the name of the post-secondary institution in which he/she is enrolled. A cheque will then be forwarded to the registrar. In the event that tuition has already been covered, the Association is willing to donate the money directly to the student on receipt of proof of registration.
  6. The recipient must register at a university within two years of receiving the scholarship.

National Union Scholarships
(4 @ $1000.00)

The National Union is offering four scholarships to students who plan to enter the first year of a public post-secondary education institution full-time in 2007-2008 and who are children of, or foster children of, a National Union of Public and General Employees member.

Our two components in British Columbia are the B.C. Government and Service Employees' Union and the Health Sciences Association of B.C.

The four National Union scholarships are:

  • Tommy Douglas Scholarship
  • Terry Fox Memorial Scholarship
  • Scholarship for Aboriginal Canadians
  • Scholarship for Visible Minorities
All application forms may be obtained from Ms. Slaughter in the Counselling Centre.
  • TOMMY DOUGLAS SCHOLARSHIP ($1000) Winner will be determined on the basis of a 750 - 1000 work essay on:

    "How Tommy Douglas' life contributed to making Canada a more just and equitable society"

    All children (including foster children) of National Union of Public and General Employees members who plan to enter the first year of a public post-secondary education institution full-time in 2007-2008 are eligible to apply.

    Application deadline is June 30th, 2007.

  • TERRY FOX MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP ($1000)

    Winner will be determined on the basis of a 750 - 1000 work essay on:

    "The importance of quality public services enhancing the quality of life of people with disabilities"

    All children (including foster children) of National Union of Public and General Employees members who plan to enter the first year of a public post-secondary education institution full-time in 2007-2008 are eligible to apply.

    Application deadline is June 30th, 2007.

  • SCHOLARSHIP FOR ABORIGINAL CANADIANS ($1000)

    Winner will be determined on the basis of a 750 - 1000 work essay on:

    "The importance of quality public services in enhancing the quality of life of Aboriginal Canadians"

    All children (including foster children) of National Union of Public and General Employees members who plan to enter the first year of a public post-secondary education institution full-time in 2007-2008 are eligible to apply.

    Application deadline is June 30th, 2007.

  • SCHOLARSHIP FOR VISIBLE MINORITIES ($1000)

    Winner will be determined on the basis of a 750 - 1000 work essay on:

    "The importance of quality public services in enhancing the quality of life of visible minorities"

    All children (including foster children) of National Union of Public and General Employees members who plan to enter the first year of a public post-secondary education institution full-time in 2007-2008 are eligible to apply.

Oceanside Community Arts Council Scholarship
($500.00)
This scholarship is to be awarded to a graduating arts student who is enrolling in a post-secondary level arts course of study. By arts we mean:
  • Visual arts
  • Music
  • Dramatic arts
  • Creative writing
  • Dance

Applications should be made in the form of a letter addressed to Oceanside Community Arts Council detailing the applicants qualifications, needs and plans.

In order to determine the recipient of the scholarship we will ask the school staff to provide a short list of recommended arts graduates intending to pursue studies at the post-secondary level. The Arts Council Board will then select a recipient from amongst the names put on a short list, and inform the school.

The Arts Council will forward a $500.00 cheque, to be applied towards tuition, directly to the institution at which the student will enroll.

The recipient must use the scholarship within a period of two years after high school graduation.

Application deadline is April 5th, 2007.

Oceanside Construction & Development Scholarship
($500)


  1. Oceanside Construction & Development will provide a $500 scholarship to a graduating student in School District 69who is intent on pursuing a career in the trades industry.

  2. The recipient must be proceeding to a form of advanced training at a regional college or a school of trades and technology.

  3. The recipient must have a satisfactory record of achievement and must show promise and interest in the area of trades and/or technology.

  4. Financial need will be a strong consideration in determining the recipient.

  5. The recipient of the scholarship will be selected by Oceanside Construction.

  6. Applications must reach the Counselling Center of Kwalikum Secondary School no later than 3:30 p.m. on April 5, 2007.
  7. The recipient of the scholarship must provide the donor with proof of registration at a post-secondary institution within one year of graduation.

    Oceanside Minor Baseball Association Scholarship
    ($500.00)

    I.    Scholarship:

    The Oceanside Minor Baseball Association awards two $500 scholarships to students graduating from Ballenas Secondary School and Kwalikum Secondary School.

    II.    Criteria for Selection:

    a)  The scholarships are to be awarded to students proceeding to a recognized            post-secondary institution.  Study must commence within eighteen (18) months      of receiving this award.
    b)  All applicants must have a C+ average, however, baseball skills and/or
         participation with the Oceanside Minor Baseball Association as a player, coach,        umpire, etc. will be a deciding factor as well as scholastic standing.
    c)  Applicants must have been involved with baseball for the past three
         consecutive seasons, including the current season, with the Oceanside Minor
         Baseball Association.  Candidates must also be proficient in baseball, as
         indicated by their play or have shown worthwhile contribution in coaching,
         umpiring, or administration.  

    III.    Additional Critieria:

    A letter from the coach, manager or club executive indicating the candidate's character, leadership and information as to baseball ability and/or contribution to umpiring, coaching or administration, must be included with the application package.

    IV.    How to Access:

    The recipient of the bursary must provide proof of registration at a post-secondary institution to the Oceanside Minor Baseball Association.  Arrangements will then be made to forward the proceeds to the registrar of the institution or to the landlord of the accommodation (funds can be used for tuition, books or room and board).

    Students have eighteen (18) months to utilize the scholarship (i.e.  they may take a year off before enrolling for post-secondary education).

    V.    Applications:

    Applications for this scholarship must reach the Counselling Department by April 5, 2007 no later than 3:30 p.m.

    VI.    Selection:

    Selection for this scholarship will be made by the Kwalikum Secondary School Scholarship Committee once they have had applications verified by Oceanside Minor Baseball Association.

    Oceanside Minor Lacrosse Association Scholarship
    ($500.00)

    I.  Scholarship:

    The Oceanside Minor Lacrosse Association awards one $500 scholarship. Applications for the scholarship will be received from graduating students of Ballenas Secondary School and Kwalikum Secondary School.

    II.  Criteria for Selection:

    a)  The scholarship will be awarded to a student proceeding to any recognized            university or post-secondary institution.  
    b)  All applicants must have a C+ average, however, lacrosse skills and/or
         participation with the Oceanside Minor Lacrosse Association as a player, coach,      referee, etc. will be a deciding factor as well as scholastic standing.
    c)  Applicants must have been involved with minor lacrosse for the past three
         consecutive seasons, including the current season, with the Oceanside Minor
         Lacrosse Association, if the Association had teams for them to play on in the          past three consecutive seasons.  Candidates must also be proficient in                  lacrosse, as indicated by their play or have shown worthwhile contribution in          coaching, refereeing or administration.  

    III.  Additional Critieria:

    The following must accompany the application:

    a)   A transcript of the student's makers, or a photocopy of the permanent record
          card.  If neither is available, a typed copy of the permanent record card,
          verified by the principal or counsellor's signature, will be accepted.  Current
          marks to the application date must be attached.

    b)    A letter from the coach, manager or club executive indicating the candidate's
           character, leadership and information as to lacrosse ability and/or contribution
           to refereeing, coaching or administration.  

    IV.    How to Access:

    The recipient of the bursary must provide proof of registration at a post-secondary institution to the Oceanside Minor Lacrosse Association within 18 months of graduation.  

    V.    Applications:

    Applications for this scholarship must reach the counselling department by April 5, 2007 no later than 3:30 p.m.

    VI.    Selection:

    Selection for this scholarship will be made by a committee of the Oceanside Minor Lacrosse Association of the graduating year.

    Parksville Lions Club Scholarships
    ($3000-$5000)
    Note:  Amount to be shared between Kwalikum and Ballenas Secondary Schools

    These scholarships will be awarded annually to students of Kwalikum Secondary School and Ballenas Secondary School who will be registering in programs at any post-secondary institution.  The main criteria for selection of recipients will be financial need.  

    Students applying for either scholarship will be judged on the basis of:

    • Scholastic ability as determined by the staff of Kwalikum Secondary School (minimum "C+" average in grades 11 and 12).
    • Financial need. 
    • Qualities of leadership in school and community affairs.

    Applications should be made in the form of a letter addressed to the Parksville Lions Club detailing the applicant's qualifications, needs and plans as well as basic family financial information including family income, home value and mortgage/rental information. Inclusion of the basic financial information is critical and is kept strictly confidential.  (Obtain financial information form from Ms. Slaughter)

    Scholarships will be valid for a period of 18 months following graduation.

    The Kwalikum Secondary School Scholarship Committee will submit a short-list of names for consideration for these scholarships.  The Parksville Lions Club will then have a representative come to the highschool to conduct a short interview for final consideration.  The recipients of these scholarships will then be determined after consultation with the respective school scholarship committees and the Parksville Lions Club.

    Parksville/Qualicum Fish and Game Association Bursary
    ($250)
    1. This scholarship is offered to students at Kwalikum Secondary School who are proceeding to higher education in subjects related to wildlife management, environment management, or biological sciences.
    2. The scholarship will be based on the internal examinations of the school, for the student's grade 11 and 12 years, and will be awarded on the basis of 60% academic achievement, and 40% citizenship and contribution to school activities.
    3. Should there be no suitable candidate in a given year, the scholarship for that year may be awarded to a former Ballenas Secondary School or Kwalikum Secondary School student already enrolled in one of the designated faculties.
    4. Applications must be submitted to the Principal of Kwalikum Secondary School by April 5 th, 2007.
    5. The recipient of the scholarship must advise the donors of the scholarship when he/she registers at an institution for further training. Arrangements will then be made to have the amount of the scholarship forwarded to the Registrar of the institution. The recipient has within two years to claim the bursary.

    Parksville/ Qualicum Elks Lodge #589 Bursary
    ($1000)


    This bursary has been provided by the Parksville/ Qualicum Elks Lodge #589 as a part of a Canadian organization who, as a part of our aims and objectives, are directed to the youth of our community.

    The Parksville/ Qualicum Elks reserve the right to grant this bursary on an annual basis.

    This bursarywill be presented to a graduate of Kwalikum Secondary School. The student applicant must be proceeding to one of the following:

    1. A university
    2. a regional college
    3. A technical school
    4. A vocational/trades program
    5. A hospital training program
    Preference will be given to those applicants with financial need. Academic performance will be taken into consideration but more emphasis will be given to the students role or involvement in community affairs. The studenst are expected to give a reasonable outline of their involvement in community affairs.

    The recipient of this bursary will be selected by the Kwalikum Secondary School Scholarship Committee , with input from the Parksville/ Qualicum Elks. The Scholarship Committee will provide a short list of three to six applicants to the Elks for their perusal and recommendation.

    The recipient must provide proof of registration in a post-secondary institution to the Parksville/ Qualicum Elks Lodge. Arrangements will then be made to have the bursary funds forwarded to the registrar of the institution. The recipient must use this bursary within two years (24 months) of its presentation.

    In the event that there be no suitable applicant for the award in any given year, the sponsor of the award reserves the right to cancel the award for the year under review.

    Applications must reach the Counselling Centre of Kwalikum Secondary School no later than 3:30 p.m. on April 5, 2007.

    Pauline Gray Scholarship
    ($500)

    An annual scholarship will be awarded to a graduating student from Kwalikum Secondary School in the amount of $500.00

    Selection Criteria:

    •  Financial need
    •  Positively involved with the school and community
    •  Positive role model
    •  Significant effort in school program
    •  Academic achievement 

    How to Access:

    The recipient of this scholarship must provide the donor with proof of
    registration in a post-secondary institution.  Arrangements will then be made to have the scholarship funds forwarded to the registrar of the institution.

    The scholarship funds will be made available to the selected candidate after one month into their post-secondary studies.

    Application:

    Applications must reach the Counselling Department by April 5th, 2007, no later than 3:30 p.m.  

    Selection of this scholarship will be made the Kwalikum Secondary School Scholarship/Bursary Awards Committee

    If there should be no applicant that meets all selection criteria, the donor has the  option of holding the scholarship funds over to the following year.

    Public Trustee Educational Assistance Fund
    (amounts up to $3,300.00)

    Eligibility:
    To qualify for consideration for a bursary an applicant must:

    • be over 19 years of age.
    • be a former permanent ward of the Ministry of School Services or formerly be in continuing custody of the Ministry for Children and Famalies for the Province of British Columbia,
    • be a high school graduate currently enrolled or planning to enroll in a post-secondary academic, technical or y program
    • submit a completed current year of school attended, and
    • have other sources of funding for the educational year- the bursary shall not be used as a sole means of support.
    How to Apply

    Qualicum Bay Lioness Club Scholarship
    ($500.00)

    Note: This scholarship is for a student planning to enter an academic field of study.

    1. A $500.00 scholarship will be awarded by the Qualicum Bay Lioness Club at the Kwalikum Secondary School Awards Ceremony.
    2. The recipient must be proceeding to a higher education such as a university, B.C.I.T., a regional college university transfer program, or a recognized school of nursing.
    3. The scholarship will be based on the internal examinations of the school, for the student's grade 11 and 12 years, and will be awarded on the basis of 60% for academic achievement, and 40% for citizenship and contribution to school activities.
    4. Applications must be submitted to the Principal of Kwalikum Secondary School by April 5th, 2007. No special form is required.
    5. Preference will be given to applicants from Area "H" of the Nanaimo Regional District.
    6. The recipient of the scholarship must advise the donors of the scholarship when he/she registers at an institution for further training. Arrangements will then be made to have the amount of the scholarship forwarded to the Registrar of the institution.
    7. This scholarship is to be utilized within three (3) years of graduation.

    Qualicum Bay Lions Club Scholarship #1
    ($500.00)

    This $500.00 scholarship is offered to a graduating student from Kwalikum Secondary School who will be proceeding to a post-secondary institution to study.

    Criteria:

    1. The student must be proceeding to one of the following post-secondary institutions:
      1. A university.
      2. A technical school.
      3. A regional college in either a university transfer or vocational program.
      4. A post-secondary training institution recognized by the Kwalikum Secondary School Scholarship Committee.
    2. The scholarship will be based upon the applicant's final marks in courses completed in grades 11 and 12.
    3. Consideration will be given to students who are active in school and/or community activities.
    4. The recipient must reside in the area of "Lighthouse Country", namely Qualicum Bay, Bowser, and Deep Bay. The boundary ends at Ferndowne Road.
      *If there is no qualified applicant residing in this area, the scholarship committee may select another qualified candidate.
    5. Applications must be submitted to the Scholarship Committee of Kwalikum Secondary School by April 5 th, 2007.
    6. The recipient of the scholarship will be selected by the Kwalikum Secondary School Scholarship Committee.
    7. The recipient of the scholarship must inform Kwalikum Secondary School when he/she registers at an institution of further training. Arrangements will then be made to have the amount of the scholarship forwarded to the Registrar of that institution.
    8. The student must claim the award within one year of the date of the award being made.

    Qualicum Bay Lions Club Scholarship #2
    Robert Preuss Memorial Award
    ($500.00)

    This $500.00 scholarship is offered to a graduating student from Kwalikum Secondary School who will be proceeding to a post-secondary institution to study.

    Criteria:

    1. The scholarship will be awarded to a graduating student who has satisfactory grades, but an emphasis will be placed on volunteer community service involvement.
    2. Applications must be submitted to the Scholarship Committee of Kwalikum Secondary School by April 5th, 2007.
    3. The recipient of the scholarship will be selected by the Kwalikum Secondary School Scholarship Committee.
    4. The recipient of the scholarship must inform Kwalikum Secondary School when he/she registers at an institution of further training. Arrangements then be made to have the amount of the scholarship forwarded to the Registrar of that institution.
    5. The student must claim the award within one year of the date of the award being made.

    Qualicum Beach Chamber of Commerce Scholarship
    (2 @ $750.00, 1 @ $1,000)

    The Qualicum Beach Chamber of Commerce will offer three scholarships to students who will be proceeding to a post-secondary institution to study in the general field of business. Two scholarships will be in the amount of $750.00 and available to all students who meet the criteria set out below. One scholarship in the amount of $1,000 will be available to the child or dependent of a current Chamber Of Commerce member in good standing as of December 31st of the previous year.

  9. Eligibility:

    Qualified applicants must be :

    • An undergraduate successfully completing the final year of high school

    • A graduate currently pursuing post-secondary studies

    • Chamber of Commerce $1,000 scholarship

    • Child or dependant of a Chamber of Commerce member in good standing as of December 31st 2004

    Criteria:

    The selection criteria is based on:

    • Overall school and/or community contribution
    • Demonstrated academic achievement
    • Demonstrated leadership
    • Financial need
    • Program choice should be related to Business Management, Marketing, Retailing, or related fields

    Documentation:

    Your application should include:

    • A letter to the selection committee outlining your education, school related activities, and community activities you have been involved in. List certificates, diplomas, and any rewards recieved.
    • A copy of your most recent transcript and resume
    • At least two letters of reference. They may come from teachers, employers, community leaders or personal references and must reflect community or leadership contribution
    • A brief essay (not more then 1200 words or three pages, typed and double spaced) outlining what motivated and inspired you in this field. When did you first discover your desire to pursue this area of your program and what education facility will you be attending? Include your future goals and aspirations and how this scholarship will help you achieve them.
    Applications must be submitted to the Kwalikum Secondary School Scholarship Commitee or the Qualicum Beach Chamber of Commerce no later than April 5th, 2007. The recipient of the scholarship will be determined by the Qualicum Beach Chamber of Commerce in consultation with the Kwalikum Secondary School Scholarship Committee. Scholarship recipients may be asked to speak briefly about the benefit of the scholarship at a Qualicum Beach Chamber of Commerce Function.

    Qualicum Beach Homecoming Scholarship
    (Amount TBA)

    This scholarship is offered by the Homecoming Committee of School District #69, organizers of the Homecoming anniversary celebrations of Kwalikum Secondary School. Surplus funds from these events have been donated to the Kwalikum Secondary School Scholarship fund.

    The Scholarship will be presented annually to a graduate of Kwalikum Secondary School at the school's Awards Ceremony in June.

    The student must be proceeding to a form of advanced training in one of the following:

    • A university.
    • A technical school.
    • A regional college.
    • A university transfer program.
    • A vocational program.
    • A registered school of nursing.

    The award will be based on academic standing and the personal record of the student.

    • Academic standing will be determined by the student's record in the senior secondary grades 11 and 12, and this record will constitute 60% of the award.
    • The personal record of citizenship and contribution to school activities will represent 40% of the award.

    Applications must reach the Scholarship Committee of Kwalikum Secondary School by April 6th, 2007.

    The recipient of the scholarship must advise the donors when he/she registers at an institution for further training. At that time, the amount of the scholarship will be forwarded to the Registrar. The recipient must claim the scolarship funds within two years of graduation.
