this page

raise their level of achievement in English courses, and
- to help
students prepare for post secondary education.

However, before you look at these topics, consider the points which
follow:
- Probably the
most common reason students don't do as well as they could in English
is that they don't pay close attention to the criteria by which their
assignments are to be graded. The criteria by which a teacher
marks your assignment tell you two things: what you have to do,
and how you have to do it. Never begin an assignment until you
know exactly how to get a good mark. If the criteria are not
clear, ask your teacher to clarify them for you and then make sure you
follow them!
- Do outlines
and rough copies. Even if you have left your work to the last
minute, do an outline and a rough copy. The outline puts
your ideas into the right order before you start to write. The
rough copy lets you concentrate on writing good sentences before you
worry about making your spelling and punctuation perfect.
- Proofread
word by word. In fact, it is often best if you read your writing
backwards. When you do so, you are forced to read each word
separately when you check for spelling errors.
